M350 Carbon Midrange

Description

Experience a new level of performance with our new 2″ diameter voice coil Carbon Fiber dome 3.5″ midrange. We took an esoteric approach to this completely new 3.5″ midrange by thinking outside the box for the coil and spider. Our 3.5″ driver uses a 2″ diameter copper coil with the spider on the inside of the voice coil former. That’s right, the spider is on the inside of the very large 2″ voice coil. Mounting the spider on the inside of the 2″ coil lets us have a spider with ample smooth travel to compliment the 3.6 mm one-way linear travel that the motor is capable of.

Moving the voice coil size to a full 2″ diameter on a 3.5″ midrange increases thermal power handling exponentially. The large 2″ copper coil is wound on a lightweight, eddy current eliminating, Kapton voice coil former. The all-new underhung motor topology increases motor strength for higher sensitivity and increases one-way linear excursion by 35% compared to its predicesor landing at almost 4 mm one-way linear travel at 70% BL.

At the top of the spider is a custom tooled carrier that mates the spider to the full Carbon Fiber dome. With the dome being the “cone” of the driver we wanted to ensure it was as strong as possible so the logical choice was full Carbon Fiber for its strength-to-weight ratio. And the results speak for themselves with its recommended bandwidth of 400 Hz to 5,000 Hz. Using a large dome frees up the spider inside the former to move freely and uninhibited. The carrier is a critical piece of engineering to the entire design keeping the voice coil, spider, dome, and surround in pefect alignment.

Mounting depth is also reduced to 36 mm on the M350 making it 30% shallwower than our previous M3. A shallower driver improves mounting options and overall installation flexibility. We tooled up our own minimalist cast aluminum frame with a tidy terminal block complete with direct voice coil connection wires soldered on the terminal block for easy speaker connection. We made sure to keep the same number of mounting holes and the cutout and the OD the same as our previous M3’s for an easy swap.
