FAQs

SQL Subwoofers

Q: Do I need to use the recommended enclosure volume after driver displacement?
A: No. You can use the enclosure volume before displacement. Let us show you why:

Let us give you an example – the SQL-12 displaces 0.15 ft³, and in 1.0 ft³ after displacement, the SQL-12 has a Qtc of 0.628 with an anechoic F3 of 46 Hz. If you use a 0.84 ft³ box (1.0 before displacement) the SQL-12 has a Qtc of 0.655 with an anechoic F3 of 46.2 Hz. Virtually zero change in the low-end performance of the subwoofer system.

Q: Can I use more than rated power or much lower than rated power?
A: Our warranty is very specific and does NOT cover blown voice coils from too much power. Using more than rated power immediately voids the warranty. Customers have run higher than rated power but we do not recommend it.
You can use lower than rated power. Power handling is not a power requirement. Our SQL subwoofers are perfectly happy with 250 to 500 watts of power so if you have a lower amount of power such as the latter the SQL subwoofers will perform great.

Q: Can I use an enclosure that is not recommended by you?
A: Yes. Our subwoofers are extremely flexible and will work in almost any enclosure size or type. However, for best performance, we suggest using our recommended enclosure volumes and tunings.

Q: Can I use an SQL subwoofer in an infinite baffle alignment?
A: Yes. If you use an SQL in an infinite baffle alignment you will need to lower the power to 700 watts or lower.

Q: Can I use a 4” round port with a single SQL subwoofer?
A: Yes if you use a flared port (flared on both ends).

Q: Can I use an SQL subwoofer in a marine or boat environment?
A: Yes. The front of the cone on an SQL has a glossy treatment that will resist water. The surround is made from rubber so it too will naturally resist water. And the hot/cold temperatures on a boat are less severe than in a vehicle so the adhesives will hold up fine.

Q: Does the Carbon Fiber dust cap option offer any sonic benefits?
A: Yes. The Carbon fiber dust cap strengthens the cone body which results in less cone distortion over stroke.

Q: What is the overall bandwidth of the SQL?
A: Free-air frequency response is up to 1,100 Hz. The in-car low-frequency limit is 5 Hz.SQL Subwoofers

24″ Subwoofer Series

Q: Can I use the IB series in a sealed enclosure?
A: No. The sealed enclosure volume is north of 40 ft^3 for the IB-24. The IB version is specifically engineered for Infinite Baffle alignments.

Q: What is the difference between 8 ft³ to 10 ft³ with your HS-24?
A: The difference is extremely marginal. Our HS-24’s have a very strong motor on them which means that small changes in sealed volumes will not impact the performance of the subwoofer system by any audible amount. In 8 ft³ sealed the anechoic F3 is 31.9 Hz. In 10 ft³ sealed the anechoic F3 is 31.2 Hz. You can use 25% polyfill (0.5 lbs of poly per cubic foot) in an 8 ft³ enclosure and achieve the sonic performance of a 10 ft³ enclosure with our HS-24. Going ever farther a 16 ft³ sealed enclosure yields an anechoic F3 of of 30.5 Hz. As you can see you do not need very large sealed enclosures with our HS-24 subwoofers.

Components

Q: Do you have recommended crossover settings for your drivers?
A: Yes. Using our 2-way components (TM65/M25) we recommend a crossover point of 3,000 Hz. Using the TM65/M3 you can lower your crossover point for the M3 Carbon down to 500 Hz at the lowest, but try to stay higher than 500 Hz for the M3 Carbon to be properly protected and warrantied. For our full 3-way components (TM65/M3/M25) we recommend crossover points of 500 Hz and 3,000 Hz. All of the latter crossover recommendations are with an overall highpass crossover for the complete component set usually set at 70 Hz or higher.
