So what if "hypothetically" your spider and voice coil are fine but your foam tears after only one year of reasonably responsible use ...."hypothetically" this would be bad luck or act of god right? I hope?

Depends really. Some times it could be the glue failing, other times it could be a bad surround from the begining (AKA: It had a defect before it was coupled to the cone).

I bought a no-name pair of subs at a garage sale from an older lady who said her son had them in highschool (he graduated in the early 80's). They cost me $15, and they're no marvel but they work just fine and are anywhere from 20-30 years old.

I should add to what I said at the bottom of page 1. Just because you're creating micro-cracks in the glue that the spiders are dipped in doesn't mean you're literally tearing it apart every time you use it. The micro-cracks are a factored-in piece of the pie. Speaker engineers know that a spider is going to soften slightly (or drastically) after a certain amount of time, power, and stroke is applied.

That's all it is - softening.
