Default ARC FD 600.1 and SI Mag

Hi, I recently picked up an si mag v4 and have a question about it tuning with my arc amp.

How do i know when the mag is bottoming out?

I've research about tuning components speakers but tuning subs seem to be a bit more difficult. I have the gains on my sub 1/4 of the way and crossover filter about 1/2 way.

This is a new mag that's only seen about 6 hrs of play time at most.

I have an alpine 9886 HU if that matters.

Any helps or suggestions would be appreciated. I am new to the car audio scene and did buy most of my stuff based on reviews and recommendations. So far I like the mag but i know it can do more. I'm just not tweaking it right.

Thanks!

Tuning an amp has more to do with what percentage of the way you have the knobs turned up. The gain (input sensitivity) is completely dependent on the actual output from your HU's preamp. I believe JL has a good tutorial on their web page about setting gains. In 1 ft^3 sealed, 600 watts will not bottom out a Mag. If you're hearing ticking, it's the amp clipping.

The gain on the amplifier is NOT a volume knob... You need to always remember that.

It's quite easy to hear the bottoming out. Easiest thing to say is you'll definitely know it when you hear it. It will be a loud crackly smacking sound and you will absolutely know to rush to turn the volume down. But as Nick said, if it's just like a dull sounding tone, that's the amp clipping.
