This would be hard for me to test, but just out of curiosity. If you had 2 drivers with similar specs, and with the same wattage to the drivers, one was moving 18mm one way and the other say 28mm one way. Do you think the driver moving 28mm will always be louder? Is it possible for a sub to move less, but have more output or the same as a driver moving more? Hope this makes sense.

Feel free to correct me if I am wrong on this. Typically higher excursion woofers are not as efficient as shorter throw drivers. They will handle more power and get louder in the long run as they move more air than a lower x-max driver. But I wouldn`t rely on just excursion there are a lot more factors involved.

Just thought of this. Pro audio drivers usually have very little x-max compared to standard drivers. They rely on huge sensitivity numbers and on the spot enclosures.

skibum did a really good job explaining which would be louder, etc. The key thing to note here is that power handling and linear excursion are the two biggies when it comes to deep bass SPL levels. From 40/50 Hz on up, a more efficient driver will typically move less and generate higher levels of SPL (again, due to efficiency). That is, however, dependant on the enclosure size and type. In small sealed boxes, lower efficiency drivers actually produce more SPL than their higher efficiency counterparts in the same enclosure. The thing of a sub moving less and generating more output is definitely true when it comes to ported enclosures vs sealed enclosures.
