As some may remember, I have a 15" v2 Mag in a ported box that's about 4.5 feet including displacements. Even in my Explorer it takes up about 3/4 of the floor space in my cargo area. It would be nice to gain some of that back.
I figure my options are: 1) Just seal the 15 (I guess 2 cubes would work?) 2) Get a new v4 mag and just accept the SPL hit and probable difference in sound (can somebody explain how they would sound differently somehow?), or 3) Get two new v4 Mags to help with SPL, but this would require a new amp as well. I have 1000 watts at 1 ohm now. I hardly ever crank it up as it is, maybe once every couple of weeks. Pretty much all the rest of the time my subout is on 0 (it goes from 0 to +15). I drive 35 minutes to and from work so I'm not going to have it cranked that whole way and lose my hearing. However I do love the thump in the chest and massage it gives when turned up. The 15" v2 does sound a little heavy at times, but I'm not sure if that's due to the box or something else. It has a pretty good punch, it's not bad by any means, but it could still use a little extra. Sometimes when songs have a decently long but somewhat soft bassline around 60 hz it kinda just rumbles instead of attacking accurately as I think it should. I really like the lows it pumps out, but once in a while I get a song that plays low and I hate hearing it begin to unload in the ported box. I'm sure a sealed box would fix this, but I'd lose a little authority in the 30-40 range. Cheapness is attractive to me. Should I try the 15 sealed, or would I just be better off getting a new v4? While SPL is not in the forefront of my desires, I do want a sub that can tickle my insides and give me that nice massaging thump to the back. The 15 does an adequate job on rock kick drum accuracy but I figure it could always be better. Edit: Hmm, or maybe two BMs......... Last edited by ku40; 08-17-2008 at 12:12 AM. |

Going from a ported 15 to a single sealed 12 will be a significant difference in output. However, if you're not in it to win SPL competitions and want some of your floor space back, go with a single Mag v4. If you want more output, you can always add the second Mag and swap out amps later on.

Is there still a 4-6 week wait to get the subs in the mail or was that just from around the 1st of August when they first got in? I'm just thinking that if I don't get them by next weekend (Labor Day) I may not get to install it till Thanksgiving.
I figured out a plan to use an L-shaped box and stack my amps in a slightly angled rack above my wheel well. If it all works out right, everything will only stick out 7" past my passenger side wheel well, giving me about 40 inches in width of open space. That's going from my box now that takes up 75% of my cargo space to a setup that only takes up 20%.Oh and do you guys take money orders? Last edited by ku40; 08-23-2008 at 06:35 PM. |

Jesus I fricking love this 15. I just got David Banner's "Put On" and it has about 4 bass notes in it. The lowest one sounds like it has to be below my tuning (30 hz). I took the Explorer to a parking lot and opened up the back hatch so I could watch it because I wanted to make sure I wasn't reaching mechanical limits. I crank the thing to as loud as I normally go at the loudest, and the sub was barely moving, on any of the notes! I was like uh.....holyshitballs. The thing was ripping my Explorer apart on every one of the notes (if I had to guess, they're like 60, 50, 40, and 25? hz), and the sub was literally moving about.......6 mm on every one of them.
I'm going to miss this thing when I get the new one . But I'm never going to sell it. Maybe I'll sleep with it every night after I take it out. I'm not expecting the new one to be as loud obviously, but I hope I love it the same.

Haha, I'm glad you like the 15!
Food for thought: If you like the v2 that well, the 15" v3 is MUCH better. We recently took two of the 15's in our IB box out and sealed off the openings. We halved the power and halved the surface area and it's still too much bass for the room. We've cracked drywall twice now (cracked it once, repaired it, and it cracked again). The v3 15" is by far my favorite 15" driver. The v2's seemed to be louder, but the illusion was that they lacked the extra low end grunt the v3's have, so it sounded "louder." There was a local customer of ours that shoved two v2 15's in an Acura Integra and they were REALLY loud. The blew both of them eventually, but they were really really loud in that little car.
