switching from an '05 XXX to the new Mag

This is a discussion on switching from an '05 XXX to the new Mag within the SI Products forums, part of the Stereo integrity category; I was running a '05 XXX in a 1.33^3 sealed box powered by a Zapco 9.0X at 1700 watts but ...

Default switching from an '05 XXX to the new Mag

I was running a '05 XXX in a 1.33^3 sealed box powered by a Zapco 9.0X at 1700 watts but my upgraded electrical system couldnt keep up with the demands so I preordered a new Mag last night and will power it with an Arc Audio 1500DR 900 watts @ 4 ohms. It will go in the same box.

Would 1.33^3 sealed be ok at around 900 watts or is that out of the Mag v4's handling limits?
Throw some wood blocks in there or just turn down the power?

How would it fair against my last setup? I was a bit dissapointed with the '05 XXX in a 1.33^3 sealed box.

...very anxious to get my mag, as I am sure many of you are as well.

What disappointed you about the XXX ?

Hopefully not output

The Mag will take the XXX in sound quality. In the testing that Nick has done you do not need any more than 1 cube for the mag - stick some wooden blocks in there.

actually I was dissapointed in the output. For how much power I was giving it it wasn't loud as I expected. I think the box was too small.

According to the T/S data that I have the RE XXX 12 calls for 1 cube sealed almost dead on. The Mag will certainly get moving with less power than the XXX, but the XXX is one of the highest output sealed box 12s ever made - it has linear excursion up to the limits of it's basket.

You were dissappointed in output with 1700rms on an XXX? Electrical must have been way off. Were you getting a lot of major voltage drops?

Only heard 2 XXX setups, but they were nutz and both sealed applications.

I just took the sub out of the sealed box and found polyfill in it. There was probably about 20-30 ounces of it in there! How it got in there? ...Well, my buddy wanted to help me out so I told him to mount the sub in the box and be careful. He listened but thought that adding all that polyfill would help.
Well, I mounted it back in (took out most of the polyfill), but I am powering it with 1000 watts and it sounds much livelier. I will be installing back my 9.0x tomm so we'll see how she performs. I do not think I will be dissapointed.

Also my buddy is selling me a pair of his old Mags (brand new!) so I can't wait to test those babies out.

thanks for your replies!

I owned 2x 12" RE XXX subwoofers. I used to run them sealed. And loved them.

But I bought a different car, with way less trunk space, so I had to sell them. And bought 2x 12" Soundsplinter RL-p's. But man, did they suck (compared to the XXX's).

Now I ordered 3x Magnum D2 subwoofers and hopefully they can put a smile back on my face (or at least sound WAY better as the 2x Soundsplinters).

My (very) old setup with the XXX's:

I wish I never had sold the XXX's.

By the way the subwoofers were powered by a RF 1501BD amplifier (not the Tarantule, which was just for my component sets)

That looks pretty sweet. I have heard those XXXs are pretty loud. Ya know I was going to get a soundsplinter before I came across this new mag. What was it you didn't like about the soundsplinter? Output or sound quality?

Don't want to go down on the Soundsplinter. They are excellent built, but I didn't like the way they sound (compared to the XXX's) and I wasn't to happy with the output either...

I was powering them by 2x JL Audio 1000 amplifiers... :S

Just for consideration; each XXX received approx. 750W RMS each from the RF 1501BD

while we're on the subject of the RE XXX, I was wondering how did those subs sound compared to the old mag? I know the output should be somewhat similar but what about the sq? I just want to see if the new mags will totally blow away the xbl^2 XXX away in sq?
