Default accidently drilled SI MAG V4 rubber surround..

Hey guyz,

as i said, thanks to the great idea of putting that though rubberband surrounding the MAG V4, i accidently drilled a hole in the "foam" surround..

help !!

what do i do ? do i fix it with glue ? do i need to buy a new foam surround ?

who's the genius that thought of that rubberband (with the "stereo integrity" logo on it ? what is it good for ? its very hard to mount the sub yourself with that thing..)

thanks

Hi,

The "genius" that thought of, and tooled, the gasket that hides screws for a clean look while also providing an air-tight seal was me. Don't be mad at SI for your drill slipping off the screw head and puncturing the surround. Out of the hundreds of Mag v4's that were sold, this is the only instance we have heard of where the gasket alone was the only reason for damage to the subwoofer. You can have a foam surround retro-fitted to the v4 instead of the rubber surround it came with, but in doing so you will modify the compliance of the driver and it will not perform the same.

And yes, you can fix it with glue if it isn't severe. You can also email me at nick@stereointegrity.com and I can repair it with glue for you for a nominal charge.

You can take the speaker to any speaker repair shop and they can supply you with a new rubber surround of similar compliance. They should be able to re-glue a new surround to the existing cone once they remove most of the old rubber surround.

i have been to a speaker repair shop and they don't have any similar rubber surround.

could you guys please direct me to a site/shop that sells good rubber surrounds (and ships worldwide..) and would do a decent job ? i have a great repair-man but i need to get him a decent material.

will an IDMAX rubber surround fit/work(3" XMax) ? if so, where can i get it ?

thanks alot for all the help !

It is going to be a LOT easier to fix the hole in your surround by using glue. It won't look pretty when you're done, but it is a lot easier and faster to fix it that way than it is to try to re-surround the driver. Keep in mind that re-cone kits are not available for the Mag v4.

Try to fix the hole by using glue. That will be the easiest way to fix the problem.

Re-surrounding the driver is going to be extremely difficult. Out of the drivers you mentioned the TC9 rubber surround may be somewhat close, but keep in mind that the compliance on the rubber surround from us is pretty high (soft), and is not used in hardly any other subwoofers that we know of.

If you have available GE Silicone II household Adhesive Glue which is sold in most home repair/improvement stores, it works really good for these repairs. A thin layer is all that is needed. Just let it dry overnight before firing the speaker back up and the silicone remains very flexible for a long time.
