I go all-out because it's the only thing connecting you to the road. I mow through tires pretty quick because the treadware is usually only 200 or 150 on the tires I buy. My latest purchase is a set of Falken Azenis 165's. ![]() Here's a pic of the tread:

Yeah that's a pretty goofy tread pattern. However, it looks like there's still a lot of contact patch though.
I had the Falken Azenis tires on my little Civic and it felt like it was glued to the road so I swore I'd buy those tires over again when the time came.

Not me... I buy the hardest, longest-lasting things I can find. Things that go 80,000 miles. Of course, when you put 40,000 miles a year on your truck, buying a new set of tires every 2 years is already too often!

Depends on what I'm using the car for. Daily driver gets something good for wet traction and snow tires in the winter.
The Cobra had DOT radials on it, but I never took it to the track (autocrossing is way too fucking expensive), so I got rid of those and went through a couple different tires. No need to get a tire that's not going to be used for what it was produced for. I'd say the Falkens are a bit overkill for your vehicle and driving, but I know you're a racer at heart and there's always those corners that just make you mash the pedal down. |

On the S, I've run Falken 452's and Goodyear F1-GSD3's... This summer, I'm selling the GSD3's (with way too much treadwear left to believe they went an entire summer) and picking up either Bridgestone RE01-R's or Michelin PS2's.
Winter tires for the S are Michelin PA2's. Never had a real issue driving it in the snow with those tires... Truck has Michelin LTX2 A/T tires (265/75R16) and haven't had a problem driving it in the snow either. I can't skimp on the tires. Tires are one of the biggest safety hazards on a vehicle - they have more play in how fast you stop and go than your brakes/engine. Most people don't pay enough attention to putting quality tires on - drop tons of money into making more power, and run the cheapest 400 treadwear rated tires to save a few bucks.

I liked the old Yokohama Geolander A/TII's. Actually ran 2 or 3 sets of them on the truck. They don't make them anymore. Not sure how the newer tread pattern does. I do know that with the older ones, I was able to take my 2WD truck through some places that my friends with 4x4's got stuck on their Bridgestone Revos (pulled them out, even, lol)
As far as performance car tires, they're not bad. But definitely not as good as the Azenis, RE01Rs or PS2s...

I run Cooper Discoverer ATR tires on my Jimmy, I love these things, amazing in everything I have been in, mud and snow, and never a problem.

See, down here I don't have to worry about rain and never have to worry about snow. However, these past two months have been the worst 2 months in the past 15 years I've lived here because it's rained constantly!! Other than that it's warm and sunny and the Falken Azenis tires I had on my last car were pure sex. So I'll try them out on the new Lexus and see how they fare.
However, I do agree - you must choose the right tire for the right application. I would NOT have chosen the Falken's if I lived anywhere further north.
