Default "Loud" and "Bass" functions on head unit

I was always told to turn the "loud" off and "bass" set to zero. Does actually turning the "loud"on and setting the "bass" to +2 damage subs?

Here's the story:
I bought an Adire Brahma MkIII off an internet dealer, but the sub was broke. The dealer offered a Stereo Intergrity Mag D2 (v3), I just had to pay the difference and I didn't have to send back the broke Brahma. So, I got the Mag and was happy. But I found out that Fi could recone the Brahma, so they did, and they did a great job. I put the Brahma in a 2.5 ft^3 box tuned to 33 and it was awesome. But I ended up putting back the Mag, after building a 2.0 ft^3 ported box for it. The Brahma ended up in my dad's car in a sealed box.

Well, big difference, I could barely hear anything in the sealed box. But it wasn't my car, and my dad didn't want a big box, so I left it alone. Well, my brother came to visit and borrowed the car. I rode in it and it was pretty loud. But he had the "loud" on and bass at +2. When I set the loud off and bass a 0 again the bass disapreared.

So, should I keep the loud on or turn it off?
